L.I. Prepper

Haven't heard to much from the guys about this topic. Was hoping this would take off again since I'm planning on doing some prepping of my own soon. As soon as I get a house that is. But was wondering if you fellas had any thoughts about BUG OUT BAGS?  What to put in,  shat not to, etc. Thoughts?

What Happens to the Church in TEOTWAWKI?

I was thinking about this issue after church yesterday.  There are definite requirements and rites needed to become clergy in the Roman Catholic Church (and many other organized religions, obviously).  So what happens in a TEOTWAWKI situation where the institutions (both physical and organizational) are devastated or destroyed?

If there are no more seminaries or not enough resources to maintain them, and/or no authorities to ordain new clergy, how does the church continue?  I'd imagine that practicality would win out and the remaining eldest members or most knowledgeable members would come up with new rules to meet the situation, but it also opens the door to con artists.

Grim Thoughts

I have a very interesting topic for discussion but it is much better situated for cabin talk with an abundance of beverages... Just wanted to put it on here as a reminder--we can always put the results/pertinent thoughts up afterwards.

Does a Prepared Long Islander's Chance of Survival Go Up with the Death Toll?

As I've mentioned previously, we're pretty much screwed because of the population density and limits of geography.  But, would our chances go up with an event with a large death toll?

I ran some scenarios in my head while trying to sleep.  Grid down would be a shit storm for us.  Nukes wouldn't be too much better as survival would largely depend on distance from impact - i.e. if we survive, so would most in our vicinity.  Same goes for natural disaster.  Disease has the potential to spread and incapacitate quickly with spotty survival.

So what the hell is my point?  Just another "we're screwed post"?

No.  Go with the odds. Prep for disease.  Buy some N95 masks, meds and supplies to quarantine your house.

Buy Silver Today

As many prep sites will tell you, silver is a good investment.  It has intrinsic value not just for jewelry, but other real-world applications as well.  It has industrial uses as a catalyst.  It has medical value as an anti-bacterial agent.  It's used for imaging applications.  And, most relevant to this blog, it can be used for barter if our fiat currency collapses or experiences runaway inflation.  It's a bit better than gold for this purpose because of the smaller denominations.  At around $30/oz, a 1/2 oz coin is worth $15, whereas gold is more like $1500/oz, making small denominations impractical.

In terms of the timing, I've been watching the price for a while, planning my own purchase.  Take a look at the chart below from  It's a good day to buy.
